Taking our Faith Seriously

Three questions for those who profess to be a Christian in the West. Are you serious about your faith? Do you take being a Christian seriously, or is Christianity just an app in your life and there hasn’t been a change of ‘Provider’ from Satan to the Lord Jesus Christ?

Peter Jeffery in his article ‘Serious Christians’ reports that the worshippers within his church where serious about their worship, serious about their faith and about evangelism, hence the growth in conversions and baptisms.

One comment that brings a smile, was the accusation that the church were ‘Sheep Stealers’ i.e. folk changing their allegiance from one church to another. The reply quickly went back – “We’re not sheep stealers, we just grow better grass, boom boom!!”

The Church is not in the business to entertain sinners and laugh them into the Kingdom. The business of the Christian Church is to weep the unsaved into the Kingdom, praying for their conversion.

Serious Christians are committed Christians. Nehemiah is known for his hard work in getting the walls of Jerusalem repaired, but he didn’t do it on his own. The people had a mind to work and they worked with all their heart.

Serious Christians do not have to be persuaded or shamed into action; there is a desire to serve God born of their attitude of mind. Seriousness breeds commitment and we shouldn’t approach the work of Salvation with hands deep in our pockets demonstrating a laissez-faire attitude.

Serious Christians are not miserable or solemn. We can let our ‘hair down’ and have fun, but we should also know how to cry to the LORD for the lost.

Psalm 26:5-6 says it all. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.
